Japanese addresses: postal codes, local script and international order
Understand what our Japan Post enrichment adds and what it cannot validate.
Keep postcode punctuation
Japanese postcode display commonly uses seven digits in a 3-4 grouping. Store it as text and keep the country separate from the postal value. Local display places the prefecture and municipality before finer address details; international display can reverse that order.
Join only unambiguous records
fakeloc joins sampled GeoNames postcodes to Japan Post prefecture/city labels only when all matching source rows agree on the city. Unmatched records keep their existing representation. The numeric block/house fixture is synthetic; missing town detail means this is not a delivery address.
Test both output modes
Use the same seed and data version while switching local versus Latin output. JSON preserves both representations when available. Test multiline paste, kanji storage and Latin-only downstream systems separately. The source manifest links the official Japan Post download and reuse statement.
