Address validation vs. a format check
Understand what regex, postal lookup, and carrier validation can each establish before checkout.
A format check only inspects the string
A pattern can confirm expected characters or separators, such as a five-digit shape. It cannot prove that the postal code exists, matches the selected city, or identifies a delivery point.
Input: 02108 Format check: five digits ✓ Postal lookup: separate request Delivery acceptance: separate provider workflow
A postal lookup adds reference data
A current postal directory can identify whether a code or locality appears in its dataset. The result depends on the provider, coverage, date, and input fields. An address match still may not establish that a particular person lives there.
A carrier or delivery test answers a narrower question
A carrier service can assess whether it accepts the destination for its service and rules. Test integrations in the provider sandbox, and avoid treating a successful HTTP response as proof that a shipment was delivered.
Choose the cheapest check that fits the risk
For UI feedback, use syntax checks and clear correction hints. For checkout, consider an authorized address lookup with user confirmation. For fulfillment, rely on the carrier workflow and retain its response for support.
